A RING FOR JANE McFARLAND

A Ring For
Jane McFarland

The Brief

Jane McFarland — associate Editor at Grazia, and former Fashion Director at The Sunday Times Style — came to us with a clear and personal vision. She was drawn to the idea of a bold, sculptural ring rooted in symbolism and memory. The North Coast of Ireland, where she spent childhood weekends and later got engaged and married, served as the emotional and visual anchor. Inspired by the graphic, geometric forms of the Giant’s Causeway and the folklore that surrounds it, Jane wanted a design that felt timeless, elemental, and deeply her own — a subtle tribute to place, identity, and origin.

The Consultation

Laura first met Jane in a café in Soho to begin the design journey, continuing the process through emails and WhatsApp. She arrived with a beautiful and considered moodboard - it was clear this idea had been quietly forming in her for some time. We began by exploring different stone settings, initially looking at pavé rounds before adding in baguette diamonds for a structured, yet asymmetrical feel. The first iteration featured a single elongated baguette, but we ultimately shifted to a composition of smaller, divided stones - better reflecting the fragmented beauty of the Giant’s Causeway. We sent Jane a wax model to trial for fit and comfort, making a few final refinements to soften the ridges and ensure the piece felt substantial yet wearable.

The Result

The finished ring is a modern talisman: bold, angular, and grounded in story. Set in 18ct yellow gold and detailed with round and baguette cut diamonds, it draws on the raw geometry of the Irish coastline while nodding to our Art Deco influences.

Soon after we completed the ring, Jane welcomed her daughter. Though not originally conceived as a piece about motherhood, it’s since taken on new meaning - becoming a quiet marker of identity at a transformative moment in life. One day, it may be passed down as a reminder to her daughter of where she comes from, and the strength she inherits.

The North Coast of Ireland holds a special place in my heart – it’s where I spent weekends and summer holidays as a kid, and more recently where I got engaged and married.

I’ve always loved the graphic, basalt structure of the Giant’s Causeway and the mythical legends that surround it; I have fond memories of being windswept and frozen while jumping across the iconic hexagonal stones so designing a ring that nods to that is, for me, a subtle reminder to never forget where you come from.
